Supermoon Some Thing to Fear.

Kathmandu : On 19 March, 2011, the moon's wonky orbit will bring our natural satellite closer to Earth than any time in the last 18 years.
So why does this happen? because the moon zips around the planet on a slightly elliptical orbit, it's sometimes far away from the Earth -- a 400,000 km distance called a lunar apogee -- and sometimes a little bit closer -- around 360,000 km, called the lunar perigee.
When a perigee coincides with a new or full moon, our favourite orbiting space rock is bigger, brighter and closer than ever. In 1979, astrologer Richard Nolle coined the term "Supermoon" to describe the phenomenon. Some astronomers prefer to use the slightly-more-sobering "perigee-syzygy" (meaning astronomical alignment, because the Sun, moon and Earth are in line).
While those exact conditions might sound rather rare, Supermoons are actually very common. Full or new moons occur during lunar perigee around four to six times a year, making them slightly less super than the name might suggest. Still, the last time the moon came this close to the planet -- at 356,548 km -- was back in 1992.
Some of the more imaginative apocalyptic soothsayers reckon that a supermoon's close orbit can fundamentally affect the planet's delicate balance, and lead to severe natural disasters.
The last notably-extreme supermoon occurred in late January 2010, a few weeks after last year's Haitian earthquake. Before that, a perigee-syzygy occurred two weeks before the tsunami and earthquake in the Indian Ocean that ferociously struck Indonesia. Predictably, some are connecting the tragedy in Japan with 19 March's ultra-close moon.
But in all of these cases, because the disasters occurred a few weeks before or after a lunar perigee, the moon was actually further away than ever. In the two weeks before a supermoon hits, for example, the rocky world-ender is at the opposite point in its orbit at a lunar apogee. Put simply, it's dodgy science, and you shouldn't worry about it.
Dr. James Gavin, a chief scientist at Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center, agrees. "The effects on Earth from a supermoon are minor," explains Gavin on the Nasa website. "According to the most detailed studies by terrestrial seismologists and volcanologists, the combination of the moon being at its closest to Earth in its orbit, and being in its 'full moon' configuration should not affect the internal energy balance of the Earth."
"The Earth has stored a tremendous amount of internal energy within its thin outer shell or crust, and the small differences in the tidal forces exerted by the moon are not enough to fundamentally overcome the much larger forces within the planet." The US Geological Survey says, "any studies in the past have shown no significant correlations between the rate of earthquake occurrence and the semi-diurnal tides when using large earthquake catalogs."
